The Internal Revenue Service has stated that they are seeing a large increase in IRS phone scams. The most important thing to know is that the IRS will never call you about an outstanding bill without first mailing you a bill. Additionally, they will never demand that payment be made via wire transfer, Western Union, Moneygram, or any other similar payment method. If you ever believe that you may be a target of an IRS scam phone call, hang up immediately, and call the IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040.
NPR recently posted a actual phone call from Pindrop Security, an Atlanta based company that investigates phone fraud. You can hear the entire call on NPR.org.
